Katarina began skating at age five. old. She was only five when her talent became evident, and at the age of Karl-Marx-Stadt she entered a school specifically for kids who have athletic talents. This was where she met their coach Jutta Muller. Witt was able to make her mark in 1982, when she was second in her first World Championships at Copenhagen. Then, she was dominating the sport with her elegance and grace. Olympic success Katarina (now Witt) took home the women's Figure Skating Gold Medal at the Sarajevo Winter Games. Four years later she was able to win an even tougher competition. The free skating contest, however she earned the gold medal based on her performance during the compulsory figure and the short-form program. Witt is the only repeat medalist in figure skating for women since Sonja Henie. Hall of Fame Witt had amazing success as a performer, however she returned to figure skating to participate in the Lillehammer Winter Games of 1994. In spite of not receiving a gold medal, Witt won over the audience. The year 1995 was the year that Witt received her induction into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame.
