As a biological concept, an adult animal or human is one who has fully developed. The human world of adults refer to social and legal concepts. An adult who is legally mature is, as opposed to "minors" or "non-adults can be defined as someone older than the average age and thus considered to be independent, responsible and autonomous. Also, they can be described as a "major". The typical age of attaining legal adulthood is 18, but the definition can vary based on laws, countries as well as the stage of psychological development.

In the lifespan of an individual, adulthood refers to the point when a person has achieved full mental and physical maturity. Adulthood is typically believed to start around the age of 20 or 21. In general, middle age is around 40 years of age, and is followed by a period of approximately 60 years. There are three main levels of adulthood: beginning in early adults (18 up to the mid-30s), middle adulthood (mid-30s through mid-60s) and then the final stage of adulthood (mid-60s up to the point of the time of death). At the beginning stage of adulthood (between 20-40), our bodies have reached their full maturity although our weight and height may rise slightly. As we enter our early twenties, the physical capabilities of our bodies reach their highest levels. This includes muscle strength and reaction time.
